Is your friend Malaysian? When we lived there we were spoiled by the food choices, and OMG the Indian food, I just want to cry thinking about it! You would cry too if you knew how cheap it was; $1.50 for all the food in your top photo, including a lassi, sans the dishes and plus a banana leaf.
