13 miles 1240 - 3790 ft. otago, new zealand november 26, 2004 |
There is something magical about New Zealand. On our second trip to this lovely country, we toured the South Island in late spring only to encounter late winter. Many of our intended backpacks were closed or rescheduled due to avalanche danger. On a lark, we opted for a dayhike on the Rockburn out of the quiet and beautiful town of Glenorchy (think Lord of the Rings). New Zealand has a tradition of world class climbers because their training grounds are not meant for the weak and pampered. The orange triangle marks the trail in the photo.
