Random things that made 2023 a little extra even if they didn’t make the 2023 photo card:
Cooking traditional Chinese New Year treats from scratch allows Jen to reduce or eliminate refined sugar and flour, preservatives, artificial flavors and colors. Black sesame ice cream with almond cookies (left) and two-tone Chinese potstickers colored with spinach and beet purées (right). (January 2023 – Boulder, Colorado)
We found the largest patch of rare wild Calypso Orchids we’ve ever encountered – numbering close to 100! (June 2023 – Crested Butte)
Heart Lake is named for its shape in map view, but we like to think that it’s where we hike with the ones we love. (September 2023 – Indian Peaks Wilderness)
We know this magical spot year-round. Deep snows nourish spring flowers, the opening act for summer porcini and mountain huckleberries that turn this stunning red in autumn. (September 2023 – Crested Butte)

Advent calendars for members of the pack who like surprises. Most materials were reused or repurposed. Jeremy’s corresponding gifts were wrapped in reused paper, bags (paper and fabric), and ribbon, and they went into a big happy cardboard box. (December 2023 – Nederland)

Such a great update. Sorry to hear about your Neva. We know what that’s like to lose a beloved animal to cancer, so we’re thinking of you. All our best to you and your pack and a Happy 2024!

These photo collections of the year are my December tradition to enjoy — love settling in to see all of your gorgeous photos. And even if the moments are heartbreaking — sweet, sweet Neva — they deserve remembrance and are a beautiful reminder of the importance of an open and vulnerable heart.
